Background introduction of the American Environmental Protection Association's China project (for more details, please see www.cet.net.cn):
the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) first launched a low-carbon agriculture-related project in 2005. Low-carbon agriculture-related projects refer to: agricultural greenhouse gas emission reduction projects designed to improve agricultural efficiency, and cooperate with relevant local organizations to develop and monitor project greenhouse gas emission reductions and sell them in the global carbon market. As a result, farmers will benefit from the "overall cost reduction", "yield per mu increase" and "carbon index profit" brought about by the project. At the same time, the "carbon footprint" generated by activities related to farming and water resources will also be reduced.
In 2011, the U.S. Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) signed a memorandum of agreement with the State Department's Office of Poverty Alleviation to more broadly expand greenhouse gas reduction activities in rural areas across China. The State Council's Office of Poverty Alleviation, together with the Department of Agriculture, has more than 200 related offices across the country and will work together with the American Environmental Protection Association (EDF) on low-carbon agriculture-related projects.
The ultimate goal of low-carbon agriculture-related projects is to first ensure farmers' income, at the same time, as much as possible to reduce the impact of climate change on agriculture, and finally, improve the local natural resource environment. This project reduces greenhouse gas pollution in non-urbanized areas of China by establishing a self-operating model.
