the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries has approved the import of Mexican rice in 2014. So far, however, Mexico has not imported any Brazilian rice. Currently, Mexico imports only U.S. rice, which is then processed domestically into finished rice for the domestic market. U.S. traders expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries because the decision may affect U.S. rice exports to Mexico.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Trade, Venezuela and Nicaragua have been the two largest importers of Brazilian rice in the past three years. U.S. traders say the entry of Brazilian rice into the Venezuelan and Nicaraguan markets has significantly reduced the share of U.S. rice in both markets.
