according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global rice production in 2014/15 is expected to be 0.4956 billion tons, down from 0.4975 billion tons in the previous year and slightly below the earlier forecast of 0.4963 billion tons. The global decline in rice production is due to falling production in major producers such as India, Thailand and Papua New Guinea.

Global rice use is expected to be 0.4996 billion tons in 2014-15, an increase of 2% over the previous year, slightly lower than the earlier forecast of 0.5002 billion tons, as consumption in many countries is likely to increase. Global rice trade is expected to be 40.5 million tons, slightly higher than the previous year's 40.2 million tons and 1 per cent higher than the earlier forecast. Global ending stocks of rice are expected to be 0.1774 billion tons, down 2% from the previous year and slightly lower than the earlier forecast of 0.1777 billion tons.
