Dairy prices plunge New Zealand dairy farmers mass slaughter of cows

Developments

New Zealand Dairy Network (NZDN.CO.NZ) News of October 21: On the morning of the 21st, the prices of dairy products, mainly whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder and butter, fell 3.1 percent, whole milk powder fell 4.6 percent to US $2694 a ton, skimmed milk powder fell 4.5 percent to US $178 a ton, and butter fell 11.1 percent to US $2850 a ton.

New Zealand is expected to enter the peak period of seasonal dairy production this month, and dairy prices will fall as a result. Fonterra's current purchase price of solid milk is still NZ 4.6 per kilogram, which for most dairy farmers, the purchase price can only reach NZ 5.3 per kilogram to break even.

In order to make up for the losses, New Zealand dairy farmers have sent some cows and back-up heifers with no or low production capacity to the slaughterhouse truck to be slaughtered.

New Zealand Beef and Lamb said the estimated slaughter of dairy cattle in New Zealand reached 27% last year, with about 253000 head of cattle. For the first time in 24 years, the number of New Zealand cows has fallen. Meanwhile, cows are being slaughtered in large numbers, but beef prices are rising.

ANZ said that the previous dairy prices rebounded somewhat ahead of the market. Affected by the possible El Nino, dairy production will decrease this summer and purchase prices will rise sharply.
