Estimation of agricultural labor force quantity and labor productivity in China

Through the construction of the analysis framework, it is estimated that the number of agricultural labor force employment in 2016 is 130.32 million, equivalent to 60.6 per cent of the China Rural Statistical Yearbook (2017). On this basis, the calculation of agricultural labor productivity in 2016 is US $7476.5, which is 40.4% more than the World Bank (US $5325.8), indicating that my country's agricultural labor productivity is largely underestimated. Based on this method, the agricultural labor productivity in 2003-2016 was calculated and its development trend was analyzed. Some enlightenments are put forward: continuously increase the share of technological contribution in agricultural growth and increase the output per unit area; vigorously develop new agricultural business entities; continuously extend the agricultural industry chain with the concept of industrial economy, and realize the transformation from a large agricultural country to an agricultural power; continue to promote the integration of urban and rural development, realize the equalization of urban and rural labor market, promote more rural labor force to find employment or even settle in cities, and continue to reduce the supply of agricultural labor force. At the same time, improve the level of agricultural mechanization and socialized services, as well as the efficiency of labor production in the agricultural field.
