The CSFAE Annual Conference Held in end of 2013The CSFAE Annual Conference Held in end of 2013 On December 28 2013, the 2013 Annual Meeting and Forum on Agricultural Globalization was held in Beijing. The Conference was hosted by the CSFAE and the <World Agriculture> journal which is supervised by Chinese Agricultural Publishing House. Totally more than 120 participants joined this one-day's meeting, including several invited guests, around one hundred members and more than twenty non-member participants. Mr. Pan Shegzhou, deputy director of the Central Policy Research Office of CCCPC, addressed to the meeting to interpret the spirits revealed from the recent important meetings, including the Third Plenary Session of 18th CPC Central Committee and the Central Working Meeting on Rural Affairs. Prof. Ni Hongxing, director of China Agricultural Trade Promotion Center, delivered a key-note speech on national food security strategy in the context of globalization, emphasizing that the domestic-based food safety strategy with moderate import must be insisted. The conference in the afternoon was composed of three sessions, namely China's agricultural provision and trade situations, world agricultural production and trade prospect, and world food safety and security governance, respectively. In each session there were two speakers. Han Yijun, Li Guoxiang, Hu Binchuan, Jiang Changyun, Wang Zhigang and Lu Guoxue addressed to the conference successively. Luo Biliang, Zhou Yingheng, Ding Shijun, Li Xiande, Chen Jinsong and Li Cuixia made comments to the six presentations respectively. After the presentations and comments, there have been splendid questions and answers. At the end of the conference is the CSFAE Working Meeting. Vice President Xu Hui facilitated the working meeting. Secretary-General Tan Xuewen reported to the participants the work in 2013 and the plan in 2014. Supervisors Chair Zhu Lizhi reported to the participants the results of supervision on secretariat's work and finance. The member participants on the meeting discussed a lot on the work-plan in 2014. Ideas like recruiting more young members, strengthening horizontal cooperation between CSFAE and member organizations, filtering and concentrating on current hot issues, insisting the academic feature of the CSFAE have been raised and even repeated during the discussion. President Du Zhixiong responded to the various questions and suggestions during the discussion and expounded his own route of thoughts for the work in the next year. He also required the Secretariat to summarize the suggestions and comments during the meeting and submit the summary to the next President's Executive Meeting for decision making. President DU Meets with Chief Commodity Analyst from Australia DAFFOn June 5, CSFAE President Du Zhixiong, meets with Dr JAMMIE PENM, Chief Commodity Analyst and Assistant Secretary of Agricultural Commodities and Trade (ABARES), under the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry(DAFF). During the meeting, A profound discussion was on the long term food demand and supply in China (say 2025 to 2050) and associated issues as well. In view of cost increases in labor salary, land rent and water use fee in China's agricultural sector, president Du thought that China's agricultural product price in the future 25 years will remain at high level and will witness a mild growth even.

President DU Meets with Director of IATPPresident DU meets with Jim Harkness, director of IATP On June 3rd 2013, President DU Zhixiong met with Mr. Jim Harkness, Director of the US based Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policies (IATP) in Beijing. They exchanged their ideas and views on recent situations of agriultural developent in both China and USA, china's food scurity policies and the roles of transnational corporations in China's agriculture. Dueing the meeting, President DU gave a special introduction on the preparation for the forthcoming "International Conference on Sino-Foreign Comparison of Agricultural Modernization" to be organized by CSFAE and Rural Development Institute. Mr. Harkness showed his interest in get involved in this event. Secretary-in-chief of CSFAE, Dr TAN joined the meeting. (editor: Sherman)

Deputy Presient CHENG Guoqiang in charge of information center of DRCDeputy President CHENG Guoqiang is in Charge of Information Center of DRC Recently, deputy president and professor CHENG Guoqiang started to be in charge of the work of DRC subsidiary Information Center. The center is responsible for collecting information and data resources for DRC, building information processing system, exchanging information with other organizations and providing information consultation service to the society; editing the internal research outcomes; editing several periodicals; maintaining two main web sites (www.drc.gov.cn; www.drcnet.com.cn ); and also organizing research projects. prof. Deputy President TANG Zhong Nominated as Dean of SARD of Renmin UniversityOn May 24th 2013, Dr. TANG Zhong, deputy president of CSFAE and professor of Renmin University of China(RUC) and , was nominated as the new dean of the School of Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) of RUC. Prof. TANG was dean of former Department of Agricultural Economics of the same university and remained professor in the school for years, focusing on agricultural economics and world agricultural economy. Deputy president and professor KONG Xiangzhi remains the position of deputy dean and party secretary of the school, and standing council member of CSFAE and professor ZHU Xinkai remains deputy dean position also. President Du meets delegation of French Ministry of AgricultureIn the afternoon of May 17th 2013, Prof. Du Zhuxiong, president of CSFAE and Deputy Director of Rural Development Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences met with a French delegation headed by Ms. Valérie BADUEL, Vice Director of the General Bureau of Education and Research of Ministry of Agriculture of France. As required by the delegation, Prof. Du introduced situations of agricultural education, research and training strategies, and facilitated discussion with guests on potential opportunities in such fields between China and France. Dr. Liao Yongsong, member of standing committee of CSFAE and associate research fellow with RDI, and Prof. Li Renqing, associate research fellow with RDI, accompanied the meeting.

President Du meets with guests from Europe based foundation FPHProf. Du Zhixiong, president of CSFAE and deputy director of Rural Development Institute (RDI) of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, together with prof. Zhang Xiaoshan, research fellow and former director of RDI, and Dr. Tan Xuewen, secretary general of CSFAE and associate research fellow with RDI, met with guests and old friends from the Europe based Charles Leopold Mayer Foundation for Human Progress (FPH), including Mr. Pierre Vuarin, China Program Office of FPH, Prof. Chen Lichuan, director of (French) Culturemedia Association and of the governance in China, and Prof. Jin Siyan, coordinator of FPH's China programs and director of Confucius Institute in (French) Artois University. The FPH has had long friendly cooperation with RDI and CSFAE since 2000. They have worked together on an international conference on agricultural urbanization in 2000, a coastal fishery survey in 2005 and an international conference and learning journey on sustainable food supply chain in 2008. A book titled “Sustainable food supply chain: practices in China” was published based on field surveys affiliated with the learning journey. The main purpose of their visit is to discuss with RDI and CSFAE about the possibility, feasibility and specific contents and plans of cooperation. Pierre introduced the current situation of research in various fields. Prof. Du and Zhang responded positively to the proposals and also introduced related issues in China, and showed the willingness to keep close connection and consultation with FPH on the mentioned proposals, which will be implemented when consensus is reached. One focus of discussion is on the continuation of our past co-work on the Eating City initiative, which has been launched in Europe for quite many years and has accumulated rich experiences in improving sustainability of food system in cities. Based on past cooperation on related activities in China, the RDI and CSFAE are willing to conduct research and survey on Eating City issues in future. Prof. Du also introduced the book that the CSFAE is now organizing its member to compose on the development trends of world agricultural development in the past twenty years since the establishment of WTO and involvement of agriculture in WTO in 1994. He proposed that if the FPH is interested, both sides could think of co-organizing a special international conference on world agricultural development in early 2014 which would be the twentieth year of establishment of WTO. Pierre expressed his definite interest in this issue and agreed to keep further contact on it. (CSFAE)
