vietnam plans to export 650 to 7 million tons of rice this year, compared with 6.7 million tons the previous year, the Vietnam Food Association said Wednesday. But Vietnam faces stiff competition from other exporting countries. Huynh Minh Hue, secretary general of the association, said Vietnam will face competition in traditional markets, but exports to China continue to increase. Vietnam was the world's third-largest rice exporter last year, after India and Thailand. Vietnam exported 6.7 million tons of rice in 2013, down from a record 7.72 million tons in 2012. He also said that this year's rice export pressure will come from Thailand, which is trying to reduce its huge stock of rice. Other competitors include India, Pakistan and Myanmar. The price of rice exports is likely to fall this year, mainly because Thailand will take measures to reduce the price of rice exports. However, China's increased demand will help Vietnam achieve this year's rice export target. Vietnam exported about 2 million tons of rice to China last year.
