Global Agrifood System Outlook to 2050

This report, a new flagship long-term outlook released by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in September 2026, uses modelling tools to project the drivers and impact indicators of global and regional agri-food systems over the next 25 years under a "middle-path" scenario, with a focus on low-and middle-income countries. Core findings: Food security has generally improved in most regions, with the number of people facing food insecurity falling by more than 1/4 to 0.493 billion by 2050; however, West and Central Africa are the only regions where the number of food insecure people has increased rather than decreased, and most regions are still not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal 2.1. Climate change impacts vary by crop and region, with rainfed maize yields still increasing by about 20-35% by 2050, but lower than without climate change. The report emphasizes that these are scenario projections rather than predictions, and that outcomes are highly dependent on today's policy, investment and innovation options.
