the area under rice cultivation in the EU in 2013-14 was 425000 hectares, down from 467000 hectares in the previous year. The output of finished rice was 1.77 million tons, down from 1.89 million tons in the previous year. Rice production in the EU is likely to decrease to 1.73 million tonnes in 2014-15, while plantings are likely to remain stable. EU rice exports to non-EU countries in 2014/15 will be reduced from 212000 tons in the previous year to 160000 tons.

The amount of rice imported from non-EU member states will decrease slightly from 1.06 million tons last year to 1 million tons. India is the EU's largest supplier of rice, accounting for 18.9 per cent, followed by Cambodia at 18.6 per cent and Thailand at 15.9 per cent.
