Food Outlook, June 2026
This report is a semi-annual global food market outlook released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It is issued in June and November each year. The June 2026 edition predicts that global grain production in 2026 will be 2.982 billion tons, down 2.0 per cent from the previous year's record level and still the second highest in history; wheat production is expected to fall 3.8 per cent to 0.8109 billion tons, coarse grains by 1.2 per cent to 1.619 billion tons, and soybean production is expected to hit a new high of 0.4323 billion tons. The report estimates that global food import spending will rise to $2.22 trillion billion in 2025, an increase of 7.9 per cent year-on-year, a record high, mainly driven by a surge in the prices of high-value categories such as coffee, cocoa, spices and animal products. The report discusses the impact of international shipping alternative fuels and net zero regulations on small island developing States, the linkage between ethanol and sugar prices, and the 20%-25% year-on-year decline in global fertilizer trade in the first four months of 2026, and suggests that El Nino, geopolitical tensions and trade policy uncertainty constitute major downside risks.
