Crop Prospects and Food Situation, 2026 No. 2
This report, published by the Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is a forward-looking report three times a year (March, July and November) focusing on cereal production, market trends and emerging food insecurity in low-income food-deficit countries. The July 2026 period estimates that 41 countries and regions in the world need external food assistance, including 31 in Africa, 8 in Asia, 1 in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 1 in Europe. The report predicts that global cereal production in 2026 will be about 2.98 billion tons, the second highest in history, but wheat production will drop by 4.3 to 0.8065 billion tons. Cereal production in 39 low-income food-deficit countries is expected to increase by 1.4 to 0.129 billion tons, with import demand of about 47.8 million tons, higher than the five-year average. Conflict and insecurity remain the primary drivers of acute and sudden food insecurity, with Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia at high risk of famine.
