Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet Report 2024

This report, the latest update of the World Bank's original Poverty and Shared Prosperity series, is the first post-epidemic global assessment of the interconnected agenda of "ending poverty, promoting shared prosperity, and protecting a livable planet. The report shows that nearly 0.7 billion people (about 8.5 per cent of the population) still live below the extreme poverty line of US $2.15 a day; according to the standards of middle-and high-income countries (US $6.85 a day), about 3.5 billion people (44 per cent) are still poor, and this number has hardly changed since the 1990 s. The World Bank's new "Global Prosperity Gap" indicator shows that global per capita income would need to grow about fivefold on average to reach the $25 a day threshold for prosperity, and that improvement in this indicator has stalled since the epidemic, with a typical middle-and upper-income country needing about 100 years to close the gap at current growth rates. According to the current trajectory, about 0.622 billion people will still be in extreme poverty in 2030. In addition, 1 in 5 people in the world are at risk of welfare damage caused by extreme weather events.
