Global Food Assessments 2026–36
This report, issued by the Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (required by Public Law No. 480 and released before September 30 each year), formerly known as the "International Food Security Assessment", uses a demand-driven model to assess the food security of 83 low-and middle-income countries and measures the proportion of people who cannot afford 2100 kilocalories per day. The current report, published in August 2026, estimates that about 19.5 per cent, or 0.8844 billion people, of the countries covered in 2026 are food insecure, which is expected to fall to 11.4 per cent by 2036. The report pointed out that the growth rate of grain demand in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa will exceed the growth rate of local production, creating a persistent food and feed supply gap, which is regarded as a potential market for US agricultural products. The report also states that the model does not take into account shocks such as sudden weather and conflicts and is a baseline scenario.
