The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets 2026

This report is the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's flagship biennial report on global agricultural markets, with a focus on "Trade, resilience and food security: Global food markets under pressure" in the 2026 edition ". According to the report, global trade in food and agricultural products increased nearly fivefold between 2000 and 2024 to about $2 trillion billion, with low-and middle-income countries increasingly integrated into global markets, but the risk of market exposure to extreme weather, conflict and macro-financial shocks continues to rise. The study found that food trade networks can usually absorb shocks and restore equilibrium within a few months, but price spikes will be transmitted to low-income net importing countries for a long time. During the 2007-2008 food crisis, countries' "isolated" trade policies are estimated to have pushed up global rice prices by about 45 per cent and wheat prices by about 30 per cent. The report emphasizes that diversified import sources and docking trade hubs can enhance resilience, and that small emergency food reserves combined with targeted social protection are more effective than large-scale buffer stocks.
