The State of Food and Agriculture 2025
This report is the annual flagship report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the theme of 2025, "Addressing land degradation at different scales of land holding". For the first time, the report systematically quantifies the impact of anthropogenic land degradation on crop yields, estimating that about 1.7 billion people globally live in regions where 10 per cent of crop losses have been lost as a result of anthropogenic land degradation, with about 47 million of them being stunted children under five years of age, with Asia being the most affected by cumulative degradation and high population density. The report estimates that reversing 10 per cent of human-induced degradation of existing cropland (sustainable land management such as crop rotation and cover crops) could feed about 0.154 billion additional people per year. The report also points out that large farms, which account for only 1% of the total number of farms and have an operating area of more than 50 hectares, cover 75% of agricultural land, and policies must be designed according to differences in farm size.
